G.O.L.D.
G.O.L.D. or Go on Living with a Disability is a program designed to educate children, adolescents, and young adults about living with a disability.
Mission Statement: GOLD wants to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities by breaking down social barriers and chipping away at existing stereotypes through community education. At the same time, we provide children and young adult with the information necessary to make decisions to lead a safe and healthy life.
GOLD serves two fuctions:
- To provide awareness to the students that having a disability is not a fate worse than death. Someone with a disability is not to be pitied, but respected as an individual with gifts and talents to share. A person with a disability can achieve a full, rewarding life through sports, education, employment, family, and friends.
- To provide information to students to make informed decisions when it comes to critical problems students face like drug and alcohol use. Our goal is to prevent students, through our testimonials, from taking risks that may put their safety in danger. Regardless of whether one ever experiences a spinal injury or any other catastrophic injury, it is our aim to cut down on the use of alcohol and drugs by our nation's use.
The goal of GOLD is that students will become well-rounded, future leaders and employers who will see a person with a disability as a person first. Through GOLD's educational effort, we envision a future where any person, regardless of disibility, will be an accepted, productive member of society.
